I'm That Guy

I've come to the conclusion that I have become "that guy" that I would have mocked when I was younger.

I exercise almost daily. I make it a point to pick up at least one piece of trash on every run. I walk to the store rather than drive if it's within 3-4 miles, one way, of my home. I capture bugs and release them outside rather than crush them. I've moved past caring about material possessions. I eat Organic when possible. I separate and recycle my trash. My "life goals", have become paying off all debt, supporting my wife starting her own business so she doesn't have to put up with bosses that don't understand her or her goals and spending time with my family.

I think I kind of like the me that my younger self would have mocked... what did that young punk know anyway? ;-)

A reflection on 10 years of Interventionism.

10 years after the 9/11 attacks what has America "gained" from the War on Terror according to Official Sources? These numbers are what the US Government claims so these will be the most favorable to the United States out of all estimates.

~Afghanistan 1749 dead soldiers, $472 Billion and Al Qaeda and the Taliban are retaking the country. The Afghani Government says it would back Pakistan in a war with the United States.

~Iraq 4483 dead soldiers, $802 Billion with additional costs totaling up to $4 Trillion all told. All troops to be withdrawn but replaced by 17,000 "contractors" in the $1 Billion embassy. Al Qaeda was not in Iraq pre-invasion but now have groups operating there. The Iraqi Government just refused to allow the extension of US Troops being based in-Country. All troops withdrawn will be redeployed to the Persian Gulf Region rather than being brought home.

~Libya 0 dead soldiers, $2.7 Billion. Al Qaeda were not in Libya before "intervention" now they are part of the ruling Theocracy and have an oil rich base of operations. Precedent set that President of the United States can wage war without Congressional approval as long as he disguises it under the auspices of NATO/UN.

~Egypt 0 dead soldiers, $64 Billion since 1979, $20 Billion since 2001. We urged the replacement of our puppet dictator during the "Arab Spring" and now the Muslim Brotherhood control Egypt and are ratcheting up tentions with Israel.

~Somali drone attacks, Ethiopian Drone attacks, Pakistani drone attacks.

~Yemen drone attacks (Americans assassinated without charge or trial precedent set and secret committee established to advise the President on when and which US Citizens should be targets for assassination.)

~US Troops chasing "rebels" in Uganda...

Our troops are exhausted from a decade of constant warfare and spread all over the world. How is any of this beneficial to America? This is just the straight military aspects of the War on Terror leaving aside all of the loss of liberties suffered at home and the ever increasing costs of turning America into a Police State! =/

Things Change...

I was thinking recently that things change. I know this is nothing shockingly new but it seems my life has changed beyond all recognition and I didn't even notice. It was such a gradual shift that I never noticed until I ate bell peppers for the 40th or 50th time and thought to myself for the 40th or 50th time, "man, I wish this didn't have bell peppers in it, I don't like bell peppers"... precisely, it was this moment that it dawned on me, that if I really didn't like bell peppers I wouldn't have been on my 40th or 50th meal with them in it!

I didn't like bell peppers as a kid. Somewhere along the way though, I started liking them. However, I had "hated" them for so long I didn't even know that my tastes had changed. The "bell pepper incident", started me to thinking about my life. I have had the proverbial lifestyle change people talk about all the time and didn't even notice. My life today is nothing like it was 6 or 7 years ago.

What or whom do I owe my new life to? My wonderful wife, Stephanie. She keeps me young and open to new experiences and opportunities. I believe as we get older we become set in our ways, less open to change. For the most part, this isn't a bad thing. We find what works for us and stick to it. However, there is always room for growth and improvement. I've always been pretty wonderful; if never perfect. I feel no shame in loving myself. If you can't love yourself how can you expect others to love you? Having said that though, my life in immeasurably better now that my wife and I are together.

Stephanie inspires me to be a better person. To take care of myself and reach for my potential. Since we've been married she has transformed my life by being a good example. She's concerned with her health so I've started taking better care of health. She's concerned with fitness so I've become more fit and actually discovered, much to my surprise, that I enjoy it! She's open to always trying new things, be it activities, foods or experiences, thus I've been exposed to more new things and encouraged to try them myself. This is how I discovered I like bell peppers and had my lunch time revelation that my life had become incalculably better thanks to my wonderful wife and best friend Stephanie.

Have you tried any "bell peppers" lately? ;-)

Bin Laden is dead... We the People still lose.

10 years, $10 Trillion, 4 wars, thousands of lives and Bin Laden accomplished all of his goals...

Yet, even this Pyhrric victory would be tolerable if we brought home our troops and restored our lost liberties... but it wont happen...

Today, Osama Bin Laden is dead.

Today, we still have 47,000 troops in Iraq, 150,000 troops in Afghanistan, the CIA and Special Operations troops are still attacking targets inside Pakistan, and we're still bombing and increasing our involvement in Libya.

Today, the TSA and Border Patrol still illegally search Americans. The Patriot Act still nullifies the 4th Amendment. Habeas Corpus is still suspended and Americans can be killed by the word of the President without charges, trial or conviction...

Today, Liberty is still dead in America.

Land of the Free?

Not hardly. Let me elucidate.

The United States Government owns EVERYTHING. Including the people. I know what you're thinking... "No they don't I'm FREE! I have RIGHTS!" Let's look at it closely.

1) Part of all of your labor (Income tax) is automatically owed to the Federal Government for your entire life. Try to avoid this fee for allowing you to work and you will be punished through fines and/or imprisonment! Here's an eye opening fact, the first Federal Income Tax wasn't until 1930! Amazing how we prospered as a nation without massive taxes until we started trying to support a Welfare/Warfare State.

2) Think you own your home, even if it's "paid for"? Try not paying your property tax. You will be punished and "your land" taken. Think of your property tax as the fee you pay, in perpetuity, to be allowed to use "your land". Stop paying and the land reverts to it's true owner, the Government.

3) Right to Privacy or to be free of unwarranted search and seizure, a la the 4th Amendment. Not since the so called Patriot Act. Agents of the Government can now secretly listen to your private conversations and/or search your property on their own authority with a "national security letter". They claim you're a possible danger and your Constitutional Rights evaporate.

4) Habeas Corpus, a judicial mandate requiring that a prisoner be brought before the court to determine whether the government has the right to continue detaining them. Yeah, that WAS a biggie, it was around since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215! Then Bush discarded it "for our safety" and Obama has continued this Unconstitutional outrage; even furthered it. Today, by order of the executive branch, anyone, including US Citizens, that are deemed "a threat" may be detained without charges or trial INDEFINITELY. Obama carried this one step further and added that a US Citizen can be assassinated by order of the President without trial or charges even being brought against them, anywhere in the world! Obama has, in fact, ordered the assassination of a US Citizen already and has not bothered to charge him with anything.

Democrat or Republican, until we demand that everyone abide by the Constitution, neither have a right to complain about the excesses of the other. Demand that everyone have liberty or no one will have it!

Random Musing

Depilatory creams...

You know, Nair and such. Hair removal creams. I never really thought much about them growing up as I was fairly lightly haired for a man. I mean, I had FIVE hairs on my chest until I was 28 years old! Then I think I hit a second puberty or something because I started growing hair everywhere. This has brought my thoughts to depilatory creams.

I've been a fan of science fiction for as long as I can remember and I'm a voracious reader. One common item that has recurred from author to author, fictional universe to fictional universe; has been depilatory creams. Men don't shave they use a depilatory cream with an added hair growth inhibitor. No fuss no muss! Hair management nirvana!

WHER ARE THEY? Seriously people. Nair for Men is annoying and falls far short of the lofty predictions of even the most lackluster hacks in the science fiction genre! The stuff doesn't get you 100% smooth and doesn't have a hair growth inhibitor! WTH people! The ones designed for use specifically on the face are not any better even though they carry a HUGE price-tag, compared to the ones designed for overall body use.

Any chemists, cosmetologists or mad scientists out there want to get this taken care of for me? I'm tired of being stuck in the present awaiting a brighter future where I can be hair free! ;-)

American Foreign Policy

**NEWS FLASH** THE SOVIET UNION IS GONE! THE COLD WAR IS OVER!

There MAY have been some justification for the United States supporting foreign dictators, monarchies, theocracies, etc... during the Cold War; as a counter to Soviet expansionism. However, those days are long gone. In the world of today, American Interventionism only strengthens our enemies. It's hard to stir up terrorist zeal against people that aren't interfering in your country's internal workings. It's hard to paint the country leading the way for democracy, BY EXAMPLE, as evil, hypocritical imperialists. By supporting non-democratic forms of government both financially and militarily, we are proving to the world our hypocrisy. We are undermining our claims of promoting democracy with un-democratic ACTIONS of supporting dictators, juntas, monarchies and communists. We are using our blood and treasure to create enemies where none would normally exist!

Anyone that says we should be non-interventionist is accused of isolationism. Apparently we can't peacefully co-exist with other nations as trading partners. We must force them do do as we desire, no matter the cost. How has that been working out for us since the collapse of the Soviet Union and who benefits? Democracy doesn't benefit, the average US Citizen doesn't benefit. The only people that I can see possibly benefiting are multinational corporations and their corrupt political henchmen.

Stop foreign aid, bring our troops home, close down the foreign military bases we have around the globe. Let's get down to rebuilding American industry and SHOW the world how Democracy is supposed to work. Let's lead by example. Let's be the shining beacon for the world to follow willingly!

A good start...

1) Term limits for Congress. 2 terms and out. The elections should also be staggered so half of Congress are up for re-election each cycle.

2) Earmark ban. Period.

3) Constitutional Amendment requiring a balanced budget with an exception for times of war where it can be suspended. However, a budgetary deficit must be re-approved each year even during wartime and in both cases there must be a 2/3rd majority to approve a budgetary deficit.

4) Phased increase in Social Security retirement age, then tied to longevity scales there after.

5) Food stamp system replaced with Government supplied, nutritionally balanced, subsistance foods.

6) Repeal affirmative action. Either everyone is equal or no one is equal. Government mandated discrimination helps no one.

7) English as the language of Government. Diversity is one of America's great strengths but it needs to be tempered with American culture. Multiculturalism is divisive and a return to the days of segregation. Separate but equal does not work. Our own civil rights movement should have taught us that. United we stand, divided we fall.

You get what you pay for...

Quality.

You really do get what you pay for in life. No matter what you're talking about it comes down to quality. People, places or things. Quality matters.

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. I've been eating healthy and exercising for a year now. I've gone from quick, cheap food to demanding only high quality food. I eat much less now in terms of quantity so I demand every bite be the best bite I can get. I don't waste my calories on junk food or cheap fast food. I'll drive 40 miles to a bakery if I'm going to splurge on a cupcake. I want to savor every morsel so settling for some grocery store confection just isn't worth it.

The same goes for my clothes. I don't buy a lot of clothes but it has been proven time and again that quality matters. I just buy the brands that will last now. Why buy clothes that are inexpensive to simply have to replace them over and over when they wear out. I spend time and effort to take care of my car and it hasn't given me a single problem. I plan on having it for years to come. I put in the effort to make it so.

Friends! Two of my best friends are tried and true and have been with me for years. They're the guys that you can not talk to for years and pick right back up where you left off. The type of friends that are there if you need them no matter what. Then there is my best friend in the whole world, my wonderful wife. I am amazed that I'm married to not only the love of my life but my soulmate as well. She is my best friend and I enjoy just hanging out with her. We don't have to agree on everything but we can talk about anything... ok, maybe not politics, she just isn't interested. Even there though, she tries for my sake! ;-)

You get what you pay for in life. Be it paid for with time, money, compassion, understanding, etc... Whatever you put into something, you get back out in return. You put in the effort and it will pay off. If you don't, don't be surprised with dismal results.

S.A.D.

Seasonal affective disorder.

I seriously think I suffer from this.

Symptoms usually build up gradually in the late autumn and winter months.

1) Afternoon slumps with decreased energy and concentration (check)
2) Increased appetite with weight gain (weight loss is more typical of other forms of depression) (check)
3) Increased sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness (problems sleeping are more typical of other forms of depression) (check)
4) Lack of energy and loss of interest in work or other activities (check)
5) Slow, sluggish, lethargic movement (Yay, I don't have this one!)
6) Social withdrawal (check)
7) Unhappiness and irritability (check)

I'm never a happy camper while in Southern Illinois; however, I'm down right hostile about everything as the winter weather seems to DRAG ON FOREVER. =/

Gay Marriage

How is this still a problem? Seriously.

Proponents claim they want equality with mixed sex marriages. Opponents claim that marriage is a religious union and therefore only sanctioned for mixed sexes in the eyes of God. How does any of this relate to Government?

The role of Government in "marriage" is to enforce contract law between the individuals entering into the union. The simple solution for both sides of this argument? Change the name from Marriage to Civil Union in all Government roles. The Government would thus oversee the legal aspects of ALL unions between individuals no matter sex. The Government would have no role in Marriages; which would be left to Churches and Religious Organizations. Marriages would have nothing to do with legal, contractual status in relation to Government regulation. This way everyone is equal in the eyes of the law and any Churches or Religions that are opposed to same sex marriages don't have to participate in them or condone them.

Any other "impossible to solve" problems out there that need a dose of common sense?

I saw the sun today.

It makes me inordinately happy. =)

It must be winter in Illinois

It must be winter in Illinois because I'm feeling slightly depressed and confined which makes me a moody, angry individual. Week after week of sub-freezing temperatures and grey skies makes me feel like I'm a prisoner. Poor Charlie, my Mustang, her name is Charlotte but we call her Charlie... I digress... anyway, Charlie obviously hates it here as much as I do because she's killed her battery again, confining me even more than usual, making me even crankier.

I've come to the conclusion that Illinois is the armpit of America and is populated by lazy, entitled morons. Illinois is a bankrupt socialist State that is the embodiment of everything I loathe in America. Illinois is the Anti-Ameirca. The land of high taxes, government intrusion, entitlements, crappy weather, decaying infrastructure, corrupt politicians and the heartland of the lazy. The more I learn about Illinois and the people here the more I come to realize that even my low opinion of humanity was remarkably high compared to what can be achieved when a group of people really puts their so called minds to the task of willful idiocy!

The one saving grace about Illinois is that my wonderful wife, whom I adore, is here. Ah well, it's not forever, it'll end in a couple more years. I can endure anything, I'm a fucking pillar of strength. End of Rant...
